Open Mike Night at Hot Java

Bill and I went to Open Mike Poetry Night at Hot Java in Long Beach tonight. It was cool. There were 15 or 16 poets who read their work.

They hold it on the first Saturday of every month.

:cool: is so appropriate. :snap:

Sounds like a cool evening to me.

I have to ask, were they good readers of their poetry?

Or did the poetry just read well?

{does that make sense?}

Who is Mike, and did he mind?

Some was bad, some was good, some was very good. Most read well, a couple did not. (One guy alternated between speaking and singing his poem. It was very jarring.)

I've seen their sign for Open Mic night and was intrigued. There uswed to be quite a few places that held Open Mic nights (Pik-me-up anyone?). We used to go quite often. Somehow, that practice seemed to go away. I like that it's back. Hot Java is such a comfortable place, anyways.

I used to go to an open mic night at a cafe across from UNLV many moons ago.

One time, a friend got up there and read one of her original poems that is still embedded in my brain to this day:

Oh me
Oh my
Why did he die?
A dinosaur fell on his head
Fred Flintstone is dead

She actually got applause from a UNLV professor.
