Reading Is Fundamental

You have to watch these people every second. Pres. Bush's proposed budged eliminates funding for the distribution of books on behalf of Reading Is Fundamental. Details on the proposed cut are here.

Will you e-mail or write your congresspeople?

LSPoorEeyorick 02-08-2008 11:29 AM

Of course. Of all the things to elminate. What is wrong with these people?

Snowflake 02-08-2008 11:29 AM

I just did, thanks to the easy peasey link to do so.

Rat Bastard Dubya, just because he is an illiterate slug does not mean the rest of the US need to sink to his level. It's shameful, Dubya's wife Laura can read (presumably) and one would think she'd be passionate about this issue (if nothing else).

blueerica 02-08-2008 11:32 AM

I done did.

And, I actually quoted Mitt Romney. I am, after all, writing to conservative Utah Congressmen and a conservative Senator, as well as Bush and Cheney. I figured it might be effective.

See what happens when I have more time to watch the news?

Cadaverous Pallor 02-08-2008 11:35 AM

:( I've seen RIF at work, putting very inexpensive paperbacks into kids' hands, so they at least have one book at home. Damn shame if they lose funding.

LSPoorEeyorick 02-08-2008 11:35 AM

Is it not enough that they cut out funding for arts and music? They had to try to axe one of the three Rs too?

Not Afraid 02-08-2008 11:47 AM

As I listened to Romney say his bit about culture yesterday I couldn't help bu wonder how he defined "culture". I have a feeling I may define it differently than he does.

I heart Snowflake.

Email to RBDubya - check.

3894, thank you! Very quick and easy to do this for such an important program.

And NA, I'm pretty sure your feeling is right. Romney's definition of culture? Do we even want to know?

blueerica 02-08-2008 12:21 PM

Regardless of how Romney may define it, he did emphasize education and opportunity, two things they're looking to strip away, two things I can throw back at them.

Snowflake 02-08-2008 12:28 PM

I've also sent a spam-like email to everyone in my addressbook and urged them to do the same. This is positively shameful to me, education is so important and books provide such joy. I bless my old grammar school librarian and local librarian every time I pick up a book. I grew up loving to read, I had a good school library and a damn good local library. Not all kids are so blessed and that RBDubya thinks it's a good idea to take even this little thing away from the kids of our nation, all across the board, is sickening.

I heart you, too, Deebs! ;)
