Cars for Capt Jack

Well, we know the Capt loves cars (and others too).

I've voiced my desire for a MINI.

Here's a story to bring tears to the Capt's eyes.

LA man gets long-stolen Mustang back

Story Here

Quote:

"It's his car, even though he had it for four years and I had it for 38," Smongesky said. "He seems like a real nice gentleman, though."

Brakke found out Smongesky had twice rebuilt the engine and painted the Mustang from its old gold color to silver-blue.

"He wasn't too happy with that," Smongesky said.

The pair planned to meet up to transfer the car soon.

"It was hard but it was the right thing to do," Smongesky said. "I haven't really cried yet, but when he drives it away, I think I'll fall apart."

oh man. that would, to say the least, suck.

the woman: oh, Ive had this car for 40 years.
the police: its stolen, you have to give it back
the woman: screw you!
*pulls a Thelma and Louise and drives away*

I might be more inclined to try and buy it from the guy if I've had it that long

thanks Snowy. I think I'll go CarFax all my cars now

Is there any kind of statute of limitations on recovery of stolen property? She seems fine with the idea that he can have it back but if she wasn't and wanted to fight it is there recourse?

If it were another 40 years before she noticed would the original guy's estate own it? Does it matter if the original owner was compensated by his car insurance for the theft?

Capt Jack 03-21-2008 10:13 AM

one would think so on all those counts

The article I read - which I can't find now. I think the statute was up. She was going to sell the car which is how she found out about it in the first place. I don't think she HAS to give it back she just is.

I thought this story sounded familiar. With a little digging, I was able to find a similar story I read in 2006 about a stolen Corvette being recovered that had been stolen back in 1969
