Political Journalists
1. Don't you wish Ken Kesey and Hunter S. Thompson had covered the seemingly never-ending 2008 Democratic primary. Those two unleashed on the Ohio or Pennsylvania countryside would fail to get the obvious story but reel in something much better. Wouldn't you love those two riding John McCain's bus.

I think he's getting old and doesn't do it so much anymore. But the long-form political journalism/opion done by P.J. O'Rourke through the '80s and '90s is among my favorite and I think good reading for anybody willing to read politics don't match the personal filter.
Matt Tiabbi is up there on the other end of the political spectrum. Nothing good ever comes from short form political journalism. To function it requires incestuous conflict-of-interest relationships that undermine rather than build up quality journalism. On TV I enjoy the deep knowledge of Jeff Greenfield of CBS (and formerly CNN) but ultimately he gets screwed by the ADD of the format. |
