I've not seen an offical obit, but courtesy of my friend Eve Golden.
If ever there were a singer to be well matched with tiki gods and mayan temples....farewell Yma. Unforgettable voice and just plain fun. I'm honored and cherish the memory of getting to hear her unique performances in the 1980s. Campy and fun and she was a very sweet person when we met her.

Oh, this makes me very sad. My parents visited Peru in the fifties. My mom loved Yma Sumac. I remember one particular album she played over and over when I was little. I hate to tell Mom about this, but she will want to know. :(

Quite an amazing voice. I am so glad to hear that Yma was sweet when you met her, SF.

Farewell Incan Maiden. My cheese is sad. :(

I just called Bill. He's lighting a candle in our Yma Sumac Lounge (the guest room).

I read this to my mom (who is 83) and she was glad to know that Yma died peacefully and surrounded by love, with a great view from her room. And Chihuahuas! Not bad. Not bad at all.

I pretty much only know her as a not-infrequent clue or answer (YMA is very good for a crossword) in the NYT crossword puzzle.

So I'm just posting to say I know Eve Golden, in a hands off way, from when we were both very active at the Straight Dope Message Board years ago (she may still be).

Farewell, Yma... loved your style.

I actually owned the album that is pictured in the OP. She had a truly amazing voice. I recall seeing her perform on the David Letterman show in the 80s, where she and the band camped it up big time. It was quite memorable.

RIP, Yma.

An iconic swanker gone. *sniff*
