Miriam Makeba (1932-2008)
RIP, Mama Afrika
I love this song. |
Aww. :(
Such a happy song, though. It's hard to be sad while listening to it. |
I danced a version of the electric slide to this song in 5th grade for a school dance pageant thing. I never caught that she says "Johannesburg" in it. (My mom is South African.) Love this song, thanks for the link! Her happy song will live on.

Wow, I never heard of her till she died. What bubble have I been living in?
I'm sad I didn't appreciate her while the world had her with us. |
Happy song!

I heard some charming excerpts from an album she did with Harry Belafonte (available on CD as "Belafonte/Makeba") in support of the movement to free South Africa back in the year of my birth (1965). Alas, it isn't available for download on iTunes, but there's lots of Makeba there anyway.

I'd never heard of her that I know of, I'm bad with names though. She had a beautiful voice and a very upbeat sound. RIP Miriam.

I tried to find a video of the dance and came up with people all over the world doing variations!
