Advice on appliance removal...
 

So, our refrigerator has decided that it is on its last legs and we are trying to find options right now on a tight budget. Our first concern is getting rid of the old one. We had a heck of time getting it up two flights of stairs and into the apartment and I'm not sure we could get it down to the curb on our own.

Does anyone know of a service in Orange County that picks up old refrigerators at a low or reasonable price (and preferably offers more than just "curbside" service)? I've done some googling as well but I thought I would see if anyone had any local experience with this.

Any thoughts are appreciated! :)

Normally the company you buy your new refrigerator from will take the old one away upon delivery. Make sure you ask.

I agree with wolfy- both times we've bought a new fridge the company has taken the old one with them.

If it was still operational and you were just replacing it to upgrade I'd say sell it cheap on craigslist; that's how we got rid of our old one. When we bought the house, we got them to include the fridge in the deal, so we put the old fridge up on the list, sold it cheap with the caveat that they better bring a strong friend and a dolly b/c we were upstairs. Couple days later we had $75 and an empty hole where a fridge should be :)

In your case though, that wouldn't be a good idea, so I'd go with asking before you buy if their delivery people will haul off the old one.

-OOOH! Hey, call Southern California Edison and see what programs they have for replacing old fridges with Energy Star ones. They might have a recycling program or even some kind of discount deal for changing it out.

edit: Yep, here you go! You'll get $50 for them picking up your old fridge, and a $50 rebate on buying an Energy Star fridge.

I have a similar problem... except mine is washer and dryer. We brought ours home and installed them. It was hard getting in, I can only imagine getting the old ones out. So, they've been sitting here while we figure out what to do.

They are not in great condition, but could be fixed by someone who knew how and had the time and desire. Our apartment complex will not allow us to toss out stuff like that, nor can we just set it out there for someone to take. I can't imagine that Salvation Army or Deseret Industries(like SA, but LDS-based, and will take items of lesser quality than what SA will) would take it... though I will be calling DI tomorrow to see.

Tomorrow, I'm going to ask one of the maintenance guys what he suggests. He seems like the kind of guy who would know that kind of thing, and I hope he does.

They're such an eyesore just sitting in this random area. Ugh.

If you do have the delivery guys take the old one, if it's important to you to know where it's going - ask. When I got my new washer/dryer (because the house I moved into was set up for a gas dryer and not an electric one, and I had electric), I was dismayed to learn that my old ones were going to a landfill. They were in fine working order (if you had appropriate hookups) but had been bought used about 8 years before, so they weren't new. If I'd known they were going to landfill them, I would have given them away/sold them (but it would have been an easy removal, since my washer and dryer are in the garage).

We looked into having SDGE remove our fridge, but there is a week to 10 day wait and the fridge has to be in good working condition. Heh, not quite. We did find a rental service that will remove the old one for $30, and put in a new one with the first month of rental for free. And since we are considering moving when our lease runs out in November, it seemed like a good idea to put off a new purchase until then.
