Torture
I really tried to come up with a clever title but in reading these stories and the ICRC report, I'm just not feeling very clever. I'm feeling angry and disappointed and...jeez...what do WE say about other countries that do these sorts of things? And what will we now say, what moral high ground will we claim (what moral high ground can we claim), when other countries do these things to us?

We could at least feign a moral high ground when we used to ship these guys off to Mossad clandestinely. I'm sure the Wingers could come up with all sorts of justifications and excuses for what we've done, but when it comes right down to it- we failed. We talk the talk, but we sidestep and two-step when it comes to walking the walk. No wonder the world doesn't listen to us anymore.

It's at least an improvement that we can't pull the wool over the world's eyes anymore. I'm sure the U.S. government has been torturing certain prisoners since the American Revolution. At least we can't hide that anymore. It's an improvement like Watergate was an improvement for corrupt government.
Minor yes, especially if you're the one on the rack. But it's a step in the right direction. |
