I was musing about this on my LJ, and it seemed funny/poignant enough to share with all:

As some of you may know, my computer (aka: the shoebox) has been, shall we say, on the fritz lately. Okay, some days it's been completely DEAD. Worse, it's been D-E-D dead. So, I've been using Gauchograd's Crapintosh. Yes, Mac users, I still call it that. Anywho, I haven't really actively participated in much of the online life lately because of it. When I have been online, I've felt very... well, let me give you the metaphor here so you'll understand.

See, a person's computer, it's kinda like your bedroom. In "your room", you have *your* stuff, exactly what you want, as you want it, where you want it. The wallpaper and other decorations are of your choosing, the stereo is yours, the CDs are yours. Books are on the shelves of your choice, and your clock is in the corner of the room you decided to put it. Same with the computer. And using someone else's computer, well, it's kinda like staying over at a friend's house in their spare bedroom. It's not your pictures on the walls, not your bedspread on the bed, certainly not your mattress (or in this case... platform). You don't want to go around opening every drawer in the room to see what's in them, so you tend to limit yourself to living out of your suitcase, or, if they've specifically "given" you a drawer or two, you limit yourself to those drawers. And you often don't fully use those drawers because you don't want to leave anything behind when you leave, even trash. In fact, you feel uncomfortable filling up their previously empty wastebasket in the corner. So you always feel temporary, uncomfortable. And you want nothing more than to come "home" to your own creaky bed, your sheets, your stupid poster on the wall that doesn't match anything but you like it anyway, etc.

For the moment, my digital domain is working, so I feel "at home" once more.

Why don't you make your own user account on the Mac? Then you can have personalized everything. You can even make it look like Windoze, though I don't see why anyone would do that.

Kinda like, um.... putting your clothes in someone's closet. Sure there's room... but it's not yours.

We have two comps, but we mostly share space on the new one. I like having my own area, and with ours we are able to do that. The real problem is when we both want to be online- it's first come, first serve for the new computer... The other comp works, but it's old and sluggish, even on broadband.

I had such high hopes for this thread. But not even a cleavage shot. Maybe Kevy Baby will be along later.

On a more serious note -- I won't even let my husband touch my laptop. No! Don't look at it! It's mine! It's just the way I like it! Get your cooties off of it! I actually don't mind using other people's computers, but I won't let them use mine.

I hear what you're saying Morrigoon! When I was with my ex,he'd use my computer for school. When he was done I always felt like my personal space was being rummaged through. I mean I know he didn't do anything of the sort but still, it's like when your mom (after years of being away) comes to your house and decides to do "some housecleaning". Hello!! I like my house like this.

You must buy a new computer. I cracked and bought a new monitor this week. Talk about relief!

Finally, people that understand why I Remote Desktop to my computer from the nice school computers. It's like bringing home to school. The only people that understand why I don't just use those computers, and not worry about leaving mine on at home and stuff, is the IT department. ;)

When I was gone last week, a coworker used my computer. I know this because he's a notorious monitor turner off-er, and I always leave mine on. Well, that and the fact that he left a folder on the desktop with his name on it. And boring pics in it.

It doesn't bother me that he used it....but when I got back and sat down at my desk, I had a distinct feeling of "hey, someone's been sleeping in my bed!" He's lucky that I had to print something out right before I left....because I had originally shut it down for the week, and it's password protected on start up.

Wow...our IT people are so parinoid, they have basically every port on the system blocked, and no one, not even the principal, have the auth to install software or run half the software that boots with the comp except for the Sys Admin.

Otherwise, I would VNC to my mac in an instant :D
