Moore on the Decline of Newspapers

Advertising first. Circulation second.

Damn you, Lani. A long time ago, you posted about Michael Moore's "obese lifestyle". I like Michael Moore but was very taken with that phrase. Just loved, loved, loved it.

Now, it's a pavlovian response. Michael Moore? Obese lifestyle. Obese lifestyle? Michael Moore.

Tell me what you think "obese lifestyle" means. I am interested.

It means too much food and too little exercise. If I were more interesting, it would have to do with out-of-control materialism.

You neglected to mention that it is also a short cut retort by the far right to any valid point Moore makes.

Moore: We need Universal Health Care
The Right: You're fat!
Moore: Um OK. The government bailout was wrong
The Right: Why don't you lose some weight!
Moore: I see. Anyway -- network news should stop selling fear.
The Right: Have another sandwich why don't you? With an extra helping of news, uh, fear!
Moore: What about gun control
The Right: What about fat control!
Moore: Thank you
The Right: Let's debate again real soon.

Now that's some good Pavlov.

I agree with Mr. Moore. Then again, my obese lifestyle and my gay lifestyle tend to confundify my libtard lifestyle.

Since it's Moore's celebrity persona that's generally credited with his documentaries doing 10,000 times the business of any other documentaries (i.e., him being the star rather than simply the filmmaker), perhaps he maintains his "look" as part of the money-making package ... not to be tinkered with.

I think it's called not killing the cash (big fat) cow.

I shrug my shoulders at that, Tref. Michael Moore is one of the good guys.

There is no defending my love of the phrase "obese lifestyle". It's just one of those things you'll have to accept about 3894 .... or Helen, along with the fun facts that I have never forgotten to eat a meal and pretty much abhor any P.E. teacher/trainer/bra lady with a measuring tape/nurse that makes me get on a scale that walks the face of this earth.

As to newspapers: we have two local papers. The daily is putrid. The weekly is stoopid. Between putrid and stoopid, we choose stoopid because we have to get the obituaries somehow.

The only good newspaper that's delivered here is The Wall Street Journal. We get that but ignore the editorials. There are some great reporters on that paper.

My older daughter is a journalism major. She loves it and she's darn good at it. Sure hope there's a job for her when she graduates.
