I'm not exactly sure of the history behind it, but I'm assuming that it's a similar tale as how Thanksgiving in America came to be. Both are celebrated almost exactly the same way...just six weeks...

Unfortunately, in Canada, we're celebrating Thanksgiving, so we miss out on the whole Columbus Day experience.
