If it relies on census names, you'll probably want search with the full versions of names, not the more popular short versions. It is generally the former that goes on documents.

Though Alex is one of the odd ones where you do get a lot of people who are simply Alex and not Alexander. (And, for all I know Greg is a Greg and not a Gregory.)

But this really is a piss-poor system. It, for example, says nobody in the U.S. has the first name of Liam. I personally know three and they are all born and bread Americans. It isn't an uncommon name at all. (Unlike my sister, Arrin, which I still assume is a spelling that resulted from my mom's shock at an unexpected home birth, and also doesn't show up.)
