Time Traveler's Wife discussion never got off the ground, I thought it was worth another shot.
I nominate
Only Revolutions by Mark Z. Danielewski. It made the New York times list, which surprised me, as I don't consider him an author that appeals to the masses. His first book was
House of Leaves, which everyone should read. I'm not sure how to describe the writing style of this book, but it is beyond interesting. The guy is a genius. Look at the sample pages on amazon. Everyone's libraries should have lots of copies of this right now.
