And, good god... If you think life in Los Angeles or NYC is missing some of your favorite things, thank your choice of deity that you didn't grow up in the midwest. Before the nineties, it had little ethnic food of ANY kind. (I grew up eating la choi "stir fry" and calling it asian food. Tacos consisted of hamburger with "taco seasoning," or pepper.) But living there isn't about the availability of ethnic food, it's about the lower expenses, and the shorter commutes, and the small-town feeling. If you don't like it where you live, leave it. But don't try to one-up where anybody else lives.
This reminds me of the time my family moved to suburban New York in 1971. (We were California exiles for only 2 years.) My mother was horrified that she couldn’t find the ingredients for tacos in the local stores. My sister (who was going to CSUF at the time) had to smuggle some in to us when she came to visit that first Christmas.
