DiCaprio wasn't up for best actor with The Departed. Warner Bros. submitted him in the Best Supporting Actor category to avoid him splitting the vote with himself in Best Actor (both The Departed and Blood Diamond are WB).
So to some degree voters weren't given a true choice. I think Best Actor was just less crowded so people who wanted to vote for DiCaprio, did it there.
