Last night’s experience was one I direly needed—as some of you know, it’s been a rough week for me. Seeing one of my very favorite movies—complete with a panel of the original talent—helped me remember that even in challenging times, it’s OK to have fun.
And on top of all of that, Eric Goldberg was there. His Fantasia 2000 piece, “Rhapsody in Blue,” is my favorite animated short in the last fifty years. Perhaps my favorite, ever. In an uncommonly brave moment, I approached him so that I could tell him how much his work meant to me. He seemed happy to hear it—and one of his animators on the project told me so. I was very, very glad to have the chance to do that.
In weirder news, Tom and I went to dinner afterwards, and California Pizza Kitchen was Disney muckety-muck central. Except that Margaret Kerry (and, I think, possibly Alice Davis?) and several other Disney employees I know enough to vaguely recognize sat on one end of the restaurant, and the entire rest of the panel sat on the opposite side. We were back-to-back with Kerry, and didn’t see the rest until we were exiting. I had a fan-in-the-headlights moment when I realized Richard Sherman was at the table; he noticed and winked at me as we exited.
