Here too - which is why I mention option 2 has to be directly to the hiring supervisor - not into the black whole of the HR Recruiting department. The whole purpose is to get the attention of this person so if you don't show up as a candidate, they at least ask about you and possible rescue you from whatever fallout came from the HR machine. This is entirely against the published process - but it is what many of the successful candidates do.
