As an example, the compact flourescent bulbs I picked up at Ganahl are 23 watts with the [theoretical] equivalent brightness of a 100 watt bulb. The compact flourescents are energy saving because they give the same brightness while using less energy. Between that energy cost savings and the need to replace them less often, the higher cost for the bulb is cost justified.
