I think I mis-represented myself. Both ballet and opera are worthy of clapping and cheering, however, I would guess it's far more standard to blow out your vocal chords and have sore clapping hands at a rock concert than at an opera. And yes, Chicago can be pretty mellow and relaxing music, to me, so I might have been among the more quiet at the venue, though I certainly would have clapped, and perhaps given a hoot or two for a particularly good performance.
Don't laugh, cry, clap or cheer if you don't feel like it. I've watched movies I've found absolutely hilarious without laughing - all while others were coming unglued in the theater. It's usually the completely unexpected that will get me to laugh, unless I'm in a super joyous mood (then you might find me laughing at just about everything). I think it applies to everything, and I think I forgot that in the instant I tried to picture people not getting into music - which I'm
way too into for anyone else's good.
