For new DVD player, get an Oppo. Jesse turned me on to them (although I haven't purchased one yet, I will be getting the DV-981 HD when I have a moment to breath. That sucker will up-convert to 1080 P)

The Oppo with 1080p is nice and it will improve the picture of a standard DVD but you can't expect an up-converted DVD to look anything like real HD.
The cost of the Toshiba HDXA1 HD-DVD player is now under $500 and by all accounts it is as good or better at up-converting DVD's as the Oppo plus it plays true HD moves, I would be hesitant to go with a standard DVD player at this point. Espically since Netflix will send you HD moves for the same price as normal DVD's.
