They're unsullied by the reality of over familiarity. It is kind of like my recollection that Thundercats was a wonderful show until I happened to watch a few episodes again last year. Nostalgia covers many sins.
I had the same experience watching The Last Unicorn. I was so pumped it was out on DVD, and so disappointed that... well, it was pretty much lame.
