This story was a joke on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me over the weekend ("it's not a choice, they're just made that way") and the quote given was very murky as to whether "gay sweaters" was a direct McCain quote or a quote of the guy telling a reporter about the tirade.
If he did say it, I wonder if he meant it (not that it makes it better) to mean he looks homosexual in them or in the "popular among today's youth" gay=odd and or lame meaning.
If the source of the story is a younger staffer I wonder if whatever McCain did say got translated into the vernacular of today's youth (playing WoW I've come to realize just how common the gay = lame usage gets used).
