No, it's not true. However, if you read the fine print you'll generally find a phone number you can call to get yourself removed from the "pre-approved" mailing lists. It takes a while but once on that list it cut down on the number I receive.
When you get "convenience checks" for the credit cards you do have you should be able to find a number in that mailing as well for calling to stop those. And even if there isn't one call your credit card and tell them you don't want them. "Convenience" checks are about the worst thing in the world for identity theft and other scams.
