Just FYI - Verizon has a feature that's free if you do paperless billing. It synchs with your phone daily (or however often you make the setting) and updates your contacts to a website. You can add delete from your phone or on the website (easier to type). That way you always have a recent backup of what on your phone. And you can go online and make a hard paper printout too which is handy just in case.
Obviously this isn't going to help you now - and I don't know if Sprint has something similar.
