He Vas My Boyfriend! (Young Frankenstein: The Musical)

[spoiler warning] If you haven't seen the movie, there are a couple minor spoilers in here[/warning]

Mel's done it again.

I'll admit I feared the worst. Sure the Producers musical was awesome, but that's no guarantee that it could be done again. And my worry only increased when I could not find Gene Wilder's name attached to the show at all (he wrote the movie).

And for the first couple musical numbers, my fears were being realized. This show starts out weak. A couple of very blah scenes.

But then Igor shows up and all is well. CP rightly pointed out that the movie starts out a little weak too, so I guess it was a good translation.

They really did an awesome job. The casting was perfect. The lead channeled Gene Wilder, the guy who played the old man channeled Buddy Hacket, all in a good way. They had a TON of fun with sets and lighting. The songs were great.

There were many of the great jokes from the movie, some of them were in there but modified so they still surprised you. Lots of great new material. Of course they axed some old favorites, but that's to be expected. I only had issue with one change. They changed both when and how the "My name is Franken[stine]!" line is delivered and it sucked. But if that's the worst of it, then we're in good shape, right?

The big Puttin' on the Ritz moment paid off big time. Just perfect.

If you're a fan of the movie, if you're a fan of Brooks, if you liked the Producers, this is a definite recommend if you're in NY or when it goes on tour.
