Well, I really had no claim to the seat either, so I didn't really have a leg to stand on there. Plus, I was at the point where I wasn't sure that I could limit myself to polite remarks at that point. Best to keep the mouth shut as to not invite bad karma to the close of my interview trip. Not that sulking was a huge improvement, mind you....
The interview itself was odd. He wanted to know about all my old jobs. And I mean ALL of them. From the first one on. His current clerk told me work ethic is probably the most important thing to him. If I'm not demonstrating work ethic by now, I don't know what I could do differently. Plus, I got to mention that I'm currently reading a book on the creating of the polio vaccine (sure, I've been reading it for something like 6 months now, but he doesn't need to know that), which seemed to impress him (that I was reading non-fiction). And he mentioned a book and when I looked up the authors later it turns out I've read another book by them, so I could mention that in a PS in the thank you letter, thus increasing the perception that I'm well read.
But he's definitely an odd duck. Not in a bad way at all, mind you, just definitely someone walking to the beat of his own drum. Which could be great.
Meanwhile - drivers in Pittsburgh are a new kind of crazy. When merging on the freeway, they try to go behind you. Not accelerating to jump in front of you while not looking at all, but actually pacing you to merge behind. It really confused me.
