Family Eye
Come on, begin again
Found on the air after so long
Broke ties when you felt justified
But the soul does tell in time, in time
Tried to hide the child
Led her by example
Stopped our careless wandering
Took on the lives of the blind
Shrunk our world to suburb
Silenced serendipity
Sentenced to simplicity

Found on the air after so long
Buried lives when you felt fear inside

Find her on the lawn
Eyes squint into the dirt
“Something hurts outside me, Daddy,
it’ll hurt until I help.”
Put my hand on her shoulder
Sigh and begin again
Can’t lie into that face
With her mother’s features, plain
“It’s called the Family Eye, baby.
We’d hoped to keep you from it.
But if your heart’s a’ journeying
It’s probably best to follow.”
No explanation needed
No attempt to keep her home
Just prepare her for the outside life
And wave long past she’d gone
Go on, begin again
Filled with the air after so long
Opened eye, can’t be pushed aside
