After my last post, I got to thinking about these moat/trench (BTW Moonie, what does a small particle or speck, esp. of dust have to do with this conversation?).

I see a couple of disadvantages with a wet moat. First, if an animal is not deterred by water (such as with the Tiger), then having water in the moat would make it EASIER for the animal to cross as they could just swim across and crawl up the other side. (assuming that the moat is full). By having an empty moat (and assuming the animal cannot jump the width as was the case here), PRESUMABLY the animal would get stuck in the trench since they wouldn't be able to climb up the other side.

Also, I would be a little concerned about what insects (such as mosquitoes) or other critters would be attracted to the water.

Just random thoughts.
