Where v, for values less than 36,700 ft/s, is the vertical velocity of the iPod at time of release. Get it moving faster than that and we're dealing with intrasolar dynamics. Get it up to 3.2 million feet per second (at night) and you might get it out of the solar system.
So the question isn't so much how high one can fly but how fast one can fling it.
