That was my thought also.

I think the 180 minute timer hatch machine kept the phase shift off by a set and stable amount (most likely a portion of a second), thereby keeping the island and the Darma people (and their experiments) off anyone's radar. The hatch explosion and the equipment keeping it regulated, may have caused the time shift to enlarge. They said it would "save the world" to keep pressing the button every 180 minutes. Well, the world hasn't ended, but can it still be in danger? Can the time bubble not only be expanding by time (now at 31 minutes) but also be spreading outward to eventually reach the rest of the globe?
