Can you use the HP software to OCR the files that your new scanner creates?

Check the settings on the scanner: the HP scanner we have delineates between whether you want to scan text as text (as opposed to just a graphic).

If you know anyone with Acrobat (not just reader, but Acrobat Standard or Professional), that has OCR built in and can capture text in a PDF document pretty reliably.

With the exception of the expensive, high end OCR programs, they are not 100% accurate. ALL scanned text should be proofread for accuracy.
