Less usual, though I would suspect your nerve was completely dead, rather than dying. It's the final throes that are the worst in the death of a root canal. I haven't had a root canal procedure done, but from my experiences as a dental assistant for 6 years, the worst come from improperly performed root canals, the inability to retrieve
all of the dying/diseased nerve, and from the pressure of packing in any temporary/permanent cements.
