The first Europeans to visit the area didn't arrive until the 1770s (the Spanish Dominguez-Escalante Expedition). The first European settlers were the Mormons in the 1840's.
Sourdough first came to the west in the early 1800's; brought by settler families. It first became associated with miners, prospectors, and the like during the California gold rush.
