I rent from the library. I buy very little from the bookstore.
Our library system has been pretty good about getting the unabridged editions. The reader for the library copy is the same as the bookstore copy (Ilyana Kadushin). She's a decent reader. You're right though... a bad reader can make or break a book on tape.
