I remember reading somewhere that the Manhattan Project made more than a few people nervous, including Fermi. They weren't 100% sure that they could contain the reaction, and all sorts of hideous outcomes were projected. Still, the experiment went forth and the rest is history. (I realize the results of that test led to some pretty horrific weaponry, but the test itself was a success and followed the scientists predictions reasonably well.)
