The elementary school I went to didn't offer busing at all. Everybody walked except for a few cases of getting dropped off by parents. From second grade on I did the walk and I did it by myself. The intersections immediately adjacent to the school had crossing guards (a cadre consisting of volunteers from the 5th and 6th grade).
Worked fine and hardly anybody got raped, murdered, run over, or kidnapped by aliens.
So I like the walking but I find the need for constant adult supervision to be silly.
