We attended last night and it was quite a trip. It opened with the same great music as the movie did and we were thrilled...unfortunately it, musically, suffered from that point on. I love opera, but a lot of modern stuff (with the exception of the great minimalists who don't need arias) suffers from the "can't put a good aria in there or it's trite" misconception. This one went there.
Too bad, because the acting and voices of the principals were both top-notch; the stage direction was inventive (
great sex scenes on stage! Subtle and erotic - OMG!); it was actually filled with humor; and the effects were handled deftly (I always enjoy a good baritone emoting whilst crawling around the roof of a stage) -- in short: disbelief was suspended. I just wish Shore had brought his A game. Still and all a swanky evening out!
