I have seen shows where it is no doubt a 100% tribute to the diva being imitated. (One I remember was a wonderful tribute to that blue diva in
The Fifth Element. The performer was a huge fan of the film. She was awesome and a dead on match to the actress in the film.)
I have seen shows where it is mockery. (Someone dressing up as Amy Winehouse staggering around the stage.)
Sometimes it is both.
Some are merely being themselves on stage, feeling more comfortable wearing a dress and singing or lip syncing.
Actually, from all the drag shows I have seen, I can't think of one where it was a man portraying a woman to put down that woman for being a woman.
