Well, it depends on what was most important to Ian. I thought it stupid at first, but he determined his reputation and the friendships he had with Tom and Katie were more important than money. He felt he'd wronged them, and wanted to make a gesture.
Now, Survivor is all about winning a million. But the people and relationships are real, and I think he was honestly grieved at some things he had said/done (which were stupid - not taking Katie on the reward challange, plotting with Jen and Katie to oust Tom from the final four, saying it would have been a tough decision). So I actually respect him for putting those things above the money.
