Pet peeve time. I hate the use of the backwards R to signify Russianness or just in Toys R Us/Babies R Us signs.
That is a letter with an actual phonemic value. I can't help but translate it.
I see it and I think "Toys Ya Us"? "Ya-ohl cat?"
A Я is not simply a backwards R.
And the old Soviet Olympics uniforms did not say cee cee cee pee (CCCP). They said ess ess ess are (CCCP).
There. Pet peeve vocalized and therefore calmed for a short period. But with this pet peeve it does really suck living across the street from a Babies Я Us.
