My feeling has been that Burton is far better when directing "new" material. That is to say, his remakes and adaptations of known books have been his weakest films, while the ones that were written for him to direct or were taken from very obscure sources are the ones I love. Batman, perhaps, is the glaring exception, but even then I prefer Returns which I feel stands as a pretty unique chapter in Batman canon tailored to Burton, even though he himself didn't write it.
But if there were ever an existing world that was a good fit for Burton it's Wonderland, so I remain hopeful he returns to form here.
