This is not meant to be in defense of Nixon or what happened, but obviously the justice department was investigating, and this guy broke the law, and from what I have read he did it because Nixon didn't give him the top job at the FBI as director when he was second in command. I'm honestly curious here but which law did he break and was convicted for. I'm aware of an unrelated conviction in which he was pardoned by Reagan on the grounds that he had "acted on high principle to bring an end to the terrorism that was threatening our nation." I wasn't aware that he broke the law concerning Watergate however.
