What I've encountered when I say "This June gloom is awful" is almost always variations on "well it sure beats the heat, delaying summer is fine by me, I like it this way."
I may be extra biased because I grew up near the hottest part of the San Fernando Valley without central air conditioning. We had a wall unit in my parents' bedroom and when it was too hot to sleep we'd all bring sleeping bags in their room. We couldn't afford to run it all the time though, and even so, who would want to stay in the bedroom all day? Summer days were spent in the sprinklers as it was almost impossible to stay inside otherwise. I'd wake up in the morning and put on my swimsuit. To me, summer IS 95 degrees plus. (Now that I live and work in a/c I'm sure I'm no longer as tough as I used to be.)
