A few photos, perhaps? Here's my daughter hunting truffles in the Dordogne with the truffle master Monsieur Edouard and his dog Ti-Tuffe. Ti-Tuffe smells them in the ground (they smell like beets) and scratches at the ground. Then you take over with a little pick:

After, we ate the truffle shaved over some ravioli.
