If the house was built in the 80's I can almost guarantee you it is just concrete underneath. I would look at ripping it up and replacing with the wood, cork or bamboo. I see they're advertising for bamboo a lot - we just started a new bamboo cabinet line at my work. It's really pretty and a great idea. For cabinetry though - it's pretty expensive so I think that will have to wait.
