Dave Letterman was SMART to just come out and admit what he'd done. What better way to shut down the rumor machine than to take all the fun out of it by owning up to your misdeeds.
I can't condone the cheating on his relationship, but you have to admire a guy who comes out and admits what he's done. Sort of like, "Yeah, I'm a rich powerful guy and women who work on my show want to sleep with me, and yeah, I took them up on that offer". Also, I think he kind of did it to protect the women involved.
