Google actually has a horrible track record of rolling out sustainable self monetizing products.
So I'm sure Amazon is watching very closely but I haven't seen enough yet to say it is a huge threat. And the Google books will be for sale through Amazon as well so do a certain respect success will rebound back to Amazon. Interested in the limitations on the Google purchases since I'm not clear why the publishers would be any looser on DRM with them than with Amazon and if they're going to be mostly self publishers and public domain books then that's hardly a threat at all (seeing as the former are almost universally crap and the latter are almost universally lacking in market).
But more players is always potentially a good think. The Sony/B&N eInk partnership rolls out soon too and I'll be watching that closely as well.
