How about a wrap? A rectangle stays away from the Jemima Puddleduck look so possible with a triangular shawl.

If you search "wrap" at nordstroms.com, they've got a sheer silk crepe in a dove gray for $58. I don't know how you feel about the gray. It could be lovely but a pink or purple could be lovelier and that, sadly, does not exist in this item. It would depend on the dress, of course.
Over at overstock.com the word "pashmina" brings up
lots of lovely possibilities, including
