To explain that little inside joke to anybody who cares:
Birthday food was the bane of our cruise a couple weeks ago. Early in the week it was the birthday of one member of our party, and even though the request was made in the same timely manner as in the past, they were unable to fulfill a request for a key lime pie (though the next night they were overly proud of delivering some left-over key lime cheesecake squares from the late night snack trays).
So with that in mind several days ahead of Lani's birthday night I asked if it would be possible to get a pumpkin pie at the last dinner of the cruise. Lead waiter said he'd inquire. Next night said it wasn't a problem. Night after that again confirmed it.
Dinner night rolls around and they give us our dessert menus and I'm starting to think they just forgot about it when out comes our waiter with some kind of cake. "Pumpkin" cake. I use quotes because this was a three layer cake with something vaguely pumpkin flavored in the frosting.
It was not good.
