Things I regularly have open all the time on my Palm Pre: Twitter app, music app, google maps, text messaging, browser. Occasionally throw email in there, and camera. Prior to having the Pre, I got along just fine with a phone w/out multitasking, however now that I've gotten accustom to it I would be very frustrated going back.
But more to the point, while it might not be vital to have multitasking on a phone, if they're trying to position this as a device to supplant the need for netbooks, multitasking seems like a bare-minimum necessity.
